August-Sander-Award

The August Sander Award was offered for the first time in 2018 by the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, endowed by Ulla Bartenbach and Prof. Dr. Kurt Bartenbach. The prize is designed to promote young, contemporary artistic approaches to objective and conceptual photography. In honor of Sander’s seminal contribution to portrait photography, the photographic works by the applicants should primarily revolve around the theme of the human portrait. The prize is awarded every two years.

National and international artists born as of January 1, 1986 who work mainly with photography are eligible to enter. The award is endowed with 5,000 €.

The next August Sander Prize will be awarded in 2026, and applications will be accepted until February 27, 2026.
